Glocknerausstellung Kals

200 years after the first ascent of the Großglockner, Austria's highest mountain, the Glocknerhaus in Kals was inaugurated in 2000. Witnesses of times long past tell of the first people who ventured into the most remote valleys of the Eastern Alps over 4000 years ago. A stone axe, animal bones from prehistoric cult sites and silver coins from Roman times are combined with informative texts and video productions. In the second room there is a walk-in map and a representation of the fantastic natural area around the Glocknerdorf. Marmots, wallcreepers and the ibex, which is so representative of the Kals mountains, as well as other animals and plants of the high mountains are presented.

Another room is all about people. Such an imposing landscape naturally leaves its mark on its inhabitants. The hard work on steep mountain pastures, extreme winters and a long period of archaic life in seclusion have given rise to a range of religious and secular customs. Two rooms are also dedicated to the mountain guides of Kals, the "black mountain" and alpinism in general.

Location: Glocknerhaus next to the tourist office

Schloss Bruck in Lienz

In his work "Das Land Tirol. A Handbook for Travellers", the Tyrolean topographer characterizes Bruck Castle, a former residence of the Counts of Görz, as "worthy of a prince". And he is right. The town of Lienz seems to have taken a similar view, as Bruck Castle has been owned by the town since 1942. And it is not only an extremely impressive building, but also something like the "home" of the famous East Tyrolean painter Albin Egger-Lienz. After all, Bruck Castle, which must be regarded as one of THE sights, is home to the most extensive collection of works by this extraordinary artist. To put it mildly, Bruck Castle has a long and eventful history behind it and the road to the present day has been a long one. It was built between 1252 and 1277 as a residential castle by the Counts of Gorizia. In 1500, the last Count of Gorizia, Count Leonhard, died and the castle fell to King Maximilian I under an inheritance contract, who handed it over to Baron Michael von Wolkenstein-Rodenegg just one year later.

Talrundwanderweg in Kals

The lovingly designed access points with information boards and hiking maps invite you to walk the 19.5 km long Kals Valley Circular Trail. These are located at the Knopfbrücke bridge near Arnig, in Lesach near the bridge, at the end of the valley in the Taurer fraction before the valley head into the Dorfertal valley, in Großdorf/Tembler and in Kals/Glor. The entire circular tour can take six to seven hours, but can be divided into individual stages, with any number of entry and exit points. There are rest areas with rustic Glockner armchairs and information boards at several viewing points. Numerous fountains provide crystal-clear drinking water on the generally easy, carefully maintained Kals valley circular trail. Moderate differences in altitude are easily manageable and recommendable for all age groups.

Starting opposite our house, follow the path across the meadows until you reach the "old Lucknerhausstraße". Follow the signs for "Lucknerhaus" for approx. 15 minutes until a path on the right leads into the forest (signposted). You then reach the valley circular hiking trail and can start directly at the suspension bridge.

The circular trail leads through the forest and is therefore easy to walk in light rain.
